physiological testing

DEXa

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry

This is the gold-standard method of measuring body composition. Its precision allows changes of even a few grams of fat or muscle to be detected. No other method of measurement is anywhere near as accurate or precise. Two X-ray beams with differing energy levels will scan your body from head to toe. The scan itself takes only 7 minutes and your results will be explained to you by our qualified Exercise Physiologists. Knowing your body composition allows you to accurately track changes in muscle and fat mass. You can then become more specific in your methods of training.

instructions

The test takes 15 minutes
No exercise is permitted in the 12 hour period prior to analysis
Normal water consumption is recommended, as adequate hydration is important for accurate analysis
This test requires the removal of all jewellery and other metal objects to ensure an accurate reading
Trousers with metal zips are not suitable and a change of clothes will be required
Ladies wearing underwire bras will be asked to change for the test

Bone mineral density (BMD)

Using the DEXA scanner

This test measures the mineral density of your bones using the DEXA machine. The scanner is painless and uses two wavelengths of energy to accurately measure the bone density at susceptible sites, conventionally the lumbar spine and hip. Our bones demineralise as we age, which can lead to reduced bone density and, in severe cases, osteoporosis. While a debilitating disease, the effects of osteoporosis can be reduced, with the benefits of resistance exercise to bone mineral density being well documented. A BMD scan will provide valuable information to health professionals, aiding in exercise prescription and monitoring risk levels for osteoporosis

exercise metabolic test (vo2)

Both sub-maximal and maximal exercise tests are designed to measure the body’s efficiency at certain workloads. They collect information to determine the maximum capacity to transport and utilise oxygen, commonly termed VO2max. The results from this test will also be used to determine a person’s Anaerobic Threshold (AT). The AT is the point where the body converts from using fat as a fuel to using glucose, and varies between individuals. The AT is then used to determine a Heart Rate Range (HRR) inside which each person should exercise. Overall, the exercise test assesses the integrated function of cardiac, respiratory, circulatory and skeletal systems.

Basal metabolic rate test

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) are measures of the body’s minimum energy cost required to sustain vital life processes. This value accounts for approximately 70% of total energy expenditure and its determination is useful in guiding exercise and dietary prescription. The volume and composition of expired air is measured through an instantaneous breath by breath analysis. An analysis of expired gases will determine percentage of fat and glucose utilisation while in the resting state. Individual REE levels are standardised against height, weight, age and gender for comparison with calculated levels. These results can detect metabolic abnormalities and will be used to achieve optimum levels of fat utilisation through exercise and dietary prescription.
